"If thou therefore wilt worship me..."

In a case of ignored context or a quick hack job, the website of St. James U.C.C. of Limerick, PA recently contained a banner image with the verse quote of "If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine." - Luke 4:7. Which sounds like a good verse for a church focusing on worship through their "God is still speaking" campaign, but in reality is a quote of Satan speaking to Christ. The whole context (in NASB) follows.
Luke 4:6-7
And the devil said to Him, "I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours."
While they've since changed the image back, Dharp got an image of it for me!

For those who don't know, the U.C.C. stands for "United Church of Christ" who's distinctives include: "We believe that everyone – old, young, straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, physically or emotionally challenged, rich or poor, sure or unsure, lost or found, Democrat or Republican has a place in the body of Christ."

Seems to me that the verse properly identified their beliefs!

  4. One can see by the use of that passage as a banner message that few, if any, leather-bound bibles suffer from sunlight hitting their pages.
